More Jamaican Criminals Could Be Extradited To U.S.
July 29, 2010
CaribWorldNews, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Weds. July 28, 2010: Christopher `Dudus` Coke is only one in a number of criminals the U.S. wants.
United States Assistant Secretary of State Arturo Valenzuela, in Jamaica on a tri-nation Caribbean visit, said Tuesday the U.S. has handed in a series of extradition requests for suspected Jamaican criminals to the government of Jamaica.
`There is a series of extraditions that the United States has requested, and we look forward to those being processed,` he disclosed at a press conference Tuesday. But he did not reveal any names.
Valenzuela also made a push for greater effectiveness of the Proceeds of Crime Act to defeat organized crime in Jamaica.
`This Act allows the government to seize the assets of those involved in organized crime, and is one of the clearest ways to demonstrate to all Jamaicans that crime does not pay,` Valenzuela said.
Valenzuela met with Prime Minister Bruce Golding and foreign minister Dr. Kenneth Baugh.
The Assistant Secretary will conclude his trip in Trinidad and Tobago where he will meet with newly-elected and appointed government officials. He also will meet with academics and students, local media representatives, and community leaders.
